Diversity Wins project meeting in Seville

November 23, 2023

The city of Seville became the stage for an important milestone in European sport and social responsibility when the Diversity Wins project officially came to life at its first transnational partner meeting. The gathering was held alongside the European Football for Development Network (EFDN) Conference, one of the largest events in Europe dedicated to football for social change.

A Meeting of Minds and Missions

Representatives from all project partners, including professional football clubs, community foundations, and expert organisations, came together with more than 220 football-for-development professionals from across the continent. This unique setting offered the perfect platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and inspiration.

The meeting was co-hosted by Fundación Real Betis Balompié, who symbolise the strong community spirit embedded in Spanish football. Their leadership underscored the importance of grounding international initiatives in local realities, where clubs act as anchors of social inclusion.

Football as a Force for Equality

The Seville meeting reinforced a shared belief: football holds an unparalleled power to unite people, break down barriers, and amplify positive messages. With its universal appeal, football can inspire children and young people to embrace diversity and reject intolerance in ways few other platforms can achieve.

Sessions at the EFDN Conference showcased examples of good practice from clubs and foundations already active in anti-discrimination work. These insights helped shape how Diversity Wins would structure its delivery, ensuring that each partner could benefit from proven models while adding their own local expertise.

Setting the Tone for the Journey Ahead

The Seville meeting was more than a formal start; it was the launchpad for a European movement. By gathering diverse partners in one room, the event created a sense of shared ownership and responsibility. It marked the beginning of a journey in which schools, grassroots clubs, professional teams, and communities across Europe would stand side by side in the fight against discrimination.

“Football has the unique power to bring people together, regardless of their background, and that comes with a responsibility,” said Hubert Rovers, Chairman of Show Racism the Red Card Netherlands. “With Diversity Wins, we are not just talking about inclusion — we are creating real experiences for young people across Europe that will help shape a more respectful and equal society.”

From that moment onward, Diversity Wins was not just a project — it became a commitment: to use the power of football to promote respect, equality, and inclusion in every classroom, every stadium, and every community touched by the game.
